What clothes should I wear?
For a beginner, loose sports type wear covering legs and arms is acceptable. This is mainly for safety and protects you against bumps and scrapes. Remove jewellery, watches, earrings, rings, hard hair clips, etc before class. Any cuts or wounds should be covered by adhesive tape. Hands and feet should be clean and washed, nails trimmed if necessary.
After a short period of time a training uniform or ‘do-gi’ will be needed. The ‘gi’ that we wear is usually an Aikido or judo style ribbed gi and belt, in either white or un-bleached, which are both hard-wearing and protective. The canvas karate type are not advisable.
What does an Aikido class involve?
Classes usually run for one (1) to one and a half (1.5) hours.

Is Aikido a good exercise?
Aikido is an excellent form of exercise and total body work-out. Movements flow in a natural direction and promote flexibility. Students can train at their own pace and depending on their level of intensity, can vary their aerobic, cardiovascular work-out. Can Aikido be used for self defence?
Yes, Aikido can be used for self defence, however it can take longer to become proficient than in other martial arts.
Are there any physical limitations to practicing Aikido?
Aikido training can be vigorous and hard on the bodies joints. It may also involve strenuous cardiovascular activity. You should be in good health and generally be physically capable to train. If in doubt at any time, consult your medical professional.
Do you run beginners courses?
From time to time courses are run; however most general classes will provide a basic introduction for new students and give them the opportunity to ask questions and follow the more experienced students in the class.
Is there a minimum age to start?
Aikido training can be vigorous and hard on the bodies joints. For kids younger than 15 they may need parental supervision. Speak to your instructor.
Is there a maximum age to start?
Aikido is adaptable to most age groups and obviously you need to have the physical capability to train. Speak to your instructor.
When do I get to wear the Hakama (black skirt)?
The Hakama is usually worn when you reach black belt level; however different clubs may allow students to wear hakama at earlier levels, at the discretion of the instructor. The Hakama represents formal Japanese clothing worn in previous times as part of daily wear.
Is there any competition in Aikido?
In keeping with the Founder’s ideals, there is no competition in Aikido techniques. In this way Aikido-ka are able to study a true ‘budo’ art, in its traditional form.
